Trade: Grays unload B.J. Upton's $30

The Homestead Grays and Black Sox have reached an agreement on a two player swap. The trade sees 25-year-old CF B.J. Upton ($30) sent to the Black Sox with the Grays 10th round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft in exchange for 28-year-old SP Carlos Zambrano ($10) and the Black Sox's 3rd round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft.

In Upton, the Black Sox receive the Grays' original 2nd round pick in the Inaugural Draft, a player who hit 24 HR back in 2007 but has combined for just 20 over the last 2 season (1100+ AB). Upton can still run however, posting back-to-back 40 steal seasons in 2008 and 2009. However both his batting average and on-base percentage dropped considerably in 2009, leading to a meagre .686 OPS. Upton joins a crowded but talented outfield for the Black Sox, who already have LF Carlos Quentin, CF Carlos Beltran and RF Jay Bruce under contract.

The Homestead Grays shed significant payroll in the trade, $20 to be exact and add another arm to their arsenal. At "just" 28-years-old, Zambrano seems like he's been around forever. He owns a 105-68 career record but has seen his win total decline in two-straight years from 18 to 14 to 9 in 2009. He did miss a few starts however and finished with a 9-7 record over 28 starts, logging 169.1 IP of 3.77 ERA and 1.38 WHIP baseball. He gave up 78 BB and tallied 152 K's.

Fantasy Points Comparison:

Upton (484) vs. Zambrano (411.5)

This deal is now official and the corresponding roster moves have been made to the Homestead Grays and Black Sox roster pages.

Have your say.. Who won this trade?

  2. some bias analysis of the trade, BJs signed to a one year contract, price will come down, i'll re-sign him for a lower amount, point blank my team needs to produce from position spots, when you have a chance to pick up a 25 year phenom like Upton, you get rid of baggage. i can pick up a pitcher off waivers that will be as good as Zambrano.
Plus, for all we know he'll get kidnapped in Puerto Cabello and we'll watch his head being chopped off on Youtube.

  3. Whatever you need to convince yourself that picking up a player who's ratios have been declining for the last 3 seasons and giving up a quality starter is a good thing, Kedro.
